Evaluating Aerial LiDAR's Ability to Detect Understory Shrubs in Rhode Island
Wednesday May 28, 2025 10:45am - 11:15am EDT
Shrubs provide key habitat for various wildlife species of concern. Direct detection of shrubs through forest overstory is a major challenge for LiDAR. This project evaluates the ability of airborne and drone LiDAR to map understory cover in mixed deciduous/evergreen forests in Rhode Island. Airborne and drone LiDAR were validated using a terrestrial laser scanner and vegetation plots. We found airborne and drone LiDAR to detect understory cover with an accuracy of 77% and 86% respectively.

Remapping our Nation’s streams: How the USGS’s 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP) can support New England
Wednesday May 28, 2025 2:15pm - 2:45pm EDT
The USGS’s new 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP), is an initiative to comprehensively remap the Nation’s hydrography using high-quality Lidar. 3DHP improves the locational accuracy of mapped streams, increases the mapping density of headwater streams, and provides a network-addressable hydrographic framework. This presentation will highlight the key advancements of 3DHP, explores current development in New England, and showcase examples of how the new hydrography can address local needs.

Silos are for farmers
Wednesday May 28, 2025 4:15pm - 4:45pm EDT
ADOT’s Multimodal Planning Division (MPD) tackled data silos caused by disconnected information systems, which led to duplicative data collection and poor data quality. To meet federal reporting requirements, MPD implemented a geospatial system to manage core data but found other divisions managing overlapping transportation data separately. This presentation shows how ADOT created repeatable processes for evaluating silos, improving data sustainability, and integrating systems for better quality
